Empire of Oppression

"Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty."

- President John F. Kennedy

In the aftermath of toil and suffering, once the dust cleared and the harsh noise of shells stopped, the world underwent a new birth of freedom. We have pledged ourselves, by forming a new organization of united nations, that the horrors that plagued the soil and the people inhabiting on it would be prevented at all costs.

That pledge is now compromised by an evil empire in the East, led by a government who suppresses smaller nations and oppresses those whose religious devotion is not to the Chinese authority.

Under their hand are the Uighurs, a peaceful people no doubt whose earthly intention we share and understand - to live a life worth living where they can freely travel to their religious sites, mosques, and shrines to pray for hearty and healthy children and to pray that their children can grow up to have families who attend pilgrimages and jolly celebrations of games, songs, and dances.

However, we are witnessing the sheer unlawful might of the Chinese government who has instituted detention camps that imprison the Uighurs in their country. Since 2017, 8500 mosques were demolished. Boarding schools are constructed to indoctrinate the Uighurs, coercing them into believing that their culture is nothing and that they need to obey to Chinese way of life. The Chinese government has gone to extreme boundaries, forcing sterilization and birth control in order to slow reproduction among the Uighur people. We are witnessing inhumane practices committed by an authoritarian government who fears the spread of a different religion. We are witnessing events far too recognizable.

The actions of China - a soul-destroying tyranny - is ruining the lives of millions of peaceful Uighurs whose, according to graduate student Mamutjan Abdurehim, "culture is being taken away".

Such actions must be condemned, admonished, and prevented to go on any further. The United States, as well as Canada, only a little more than a week ago, proclaimed China's oppression of the Uighurs as genocide, a good start. Now, the rest of the free world, where democracy lies, must come together in solidarity and fierce determination to preserve the pledge we have made seventy-six years ago.
